Sometimes you want a horror experience that’s visceral and uncomplicated and the debut feature by South Australian directors Indianna Bell and Josiah Allen gives that in spades.
It reminded me of Monolith (2022) in its singular location, and limited cast – this one’s a two hander – but they are very different beasts.
You’ll Never Find Me doesn’t hide the fact it’s trying to scare. The dark and isolated trailer that hermit Patrick (Brendan Rock) lives in is all shadows and flickering lights. A wild storm is raging as a 2a.m. knock on his door surprises him. It’s a disheveled, young woman (Jordan Cowan), soaked to the skin and asking for help.
There are discordant strings aplenty to shred our nerves as we try and work out where the source of the horror is. Is it grizzled and taciturn Patrick whose kindness might be a ruse? Is it the girl whose story seems to keep changing? Or is it something supernatural, as indicated by odd thumps on the roof?
It takes a while to get to actual drama, and there’s a fair bit of talk and reiteration of horror beats. Sometimes it’s a hard watch, particularly for women, but it’s worth sticking with it for the cathartic payoff.
