Late night B grade horror is a bit of a MIFF treat but I think I knew 10 minutes in that this one was not going to be a ‘so bad, it’s good one’.
Charley (Alex Hurt) is a tortured artist trying to leave a rural town after his break up with Sharon (Addison Timlin), who happens to be the daughter of his nemesis, the town’s big bad – developer Hammond (Marshall Bell).
I’m not sure why it is so hard for Charley to leave. Maybe he can’t let go of trying to stop the hamfisted “damn Mexicans” racism. It doesn’t seem to be because he’s a werewolf and every month goes on a three day killing spree that he can’t remember but is compelled to paint.
The horror is schlocky and only leans in to the humour toward its end. There are some cameos – James le Gros in a bit part and photos of Charley with Alex Hurt’s real life dad William.
Director Larry Fessenden is apparently modernising horror tropes but there is nothing modern about this daytime movie version. It might have been interesting, for example, to have Charley as a monster every month but without the prosthetics. Or have Sharon be the monster which would be understandable with Charley as your BF and Hammond as your dad. Oh well.
