Ghostbook Yokaipedia (Ghost Book Obakezukan) (2022)

Standard
A visual representation of a four star rating

Like a Miyazaki story come to life, with cuteness and soundtrack by Spielberg and a cast from a Japanese staging of The Cursed Child. But don’t let that put you off.

All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen Nichts Neues) ( 2022)

Standard
A visual representation of a four star rating

If you are looking for a film that relentlessly depicts the awful hopelessness of war, Edward Berger’s re-adaptation of Erich Remarque’s novel is the one to watch.

Parasite (기생충) (2019)

Standard
101719fi-Parasite-b
Visual representation of a five star (out of five) rating

On my forays to Melbourne, I don’t often re-watch a film at the cinema – so many new films, so little time – but Parasite was worth a second go, especially as Cinema Nova was screening a black-and-white version.

Them That Follow (2019)

Standard

4.0_orange_sm

I was reminded of the quiet, rural drama of Dark River (2017) while watching this intense and satisfying dive into fundamentalism. It has some predictable beats but introspective camera work and a strong performance from Alice Englert help it transcend cliches.

Pain and Glory (2019)

Standard
pain-glory-002799_1569
Visual representation of 3.5 out of five star rating

I  was a bit trepidatious about seeing Almodóvar’s latest (in 2019 – it’s taken me a while to post this!).

Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)

Standard
Visual representation of 3.5 out of five star rating

It seems fitting to catch up on a film missed at MIFF 2019 whilst sequestered to watch MIFF 2020 online. It was a late night find and Jillian Bell’s starring role was a major draw.

Tár (2022)

Standard
A visual representation of a four star rating

With conductor, Marin Alsop‘s anti-women criticism running around my head and the film’s esoteric trailer looking a tad film school, my expectations were low.

Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Standard

Low expectations are not a bad thing. I should like Ruben Östlund’s films as they provide an often unflinching look at social and personal failings and walk the fine line between drama and satire.

Barbarian (2022)

Standard
A visual representation of a four star rating

I’m not sure of the wisdom of watching a horror like Zach Cregger’s Barbarian alone in a subterranean cinema on a Wednesday afternoon. My adrenaline was high for most of it as it twisted and turned through a dark labyrinth.

Fire of Love (2022)

Standard
Visual representation of 3.5 out of five star rating

The story of Katia and Maurice Krafft was made for a documentary like this. In the 70s and 80s, they were feted as the only volcanologist couple, bound by their love for each other and of trying to understand active volcanoes.
