MIFF 2016 – day one

Standard

footscray_finalI’m already tired but I’m here. Five hours of travel by car, bus, train and foot, passing by rain-obscured fields and suburban backyards, seeing that Franco Cozzo still lives on in Footscray. I’ve checked into my cute and quiet CBD apartment and battled the crowds of Swanston St to get to Melbourne Central for my first film. In a rush of enthusiasm, I booked a third film for tonight at 11.30pm. What was I thinking! I might skip it and go home to bed as tomorrow is a five film day.

Two good films tonight – As I Open My Eyes and Under the Shadow. I know it’s just luck to pick two 4 star films on the first day but I hope there are more like these ones.

My food highlight so far today has been mulled wine in an alleyway cafe as I waited for my Airbnb host to be ready for me. I’m staying right in the thick of the city. I can get just about any kind of food a few steps from my doorway and, being Friday night, the streets are crowded with people and noise and light. There is no such thing as dark in the city.

P.S. I skipped the third film.
