This is a mid-MIFF panacea. Gregg Araki switches the gender roles of an abusive workplace relationship and manages to provoke thought and also delight in its cheeky absurdity.

Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) is a pasty and nervous new graduate looking for a job in the art world. He gets an interview to be an assistant to glamazon Erika Tracey (Olivia Wilde). Her art shtick is overt sexuality and Elliot seems to be one of the few straight people working for her. And by straight I mean in style as well as sexuality.

From his interview, Erika makes it clear that she is expecting a sexual relationship from him. Because he’s a guy, this is framed as something that he doesn’t mind the idea of. And this paves the way for an exploration of consent and submission all wrapped up in fluoro coloured sex gear.

There are some excellent secondary characters, Chase Sui Wonders as best friend Apple, Charli XCX as girlfriend Minerva and Daveed Digs as Vikktor. The two k’s are probably important artistic expression. Erika’s studio had a similar vibe to Warhol’s pretentious entourage in I Shot Andy Warhol.

What is great about it is that you can choose to recognise the gender commentary happening or you can just go along with the fun of it, or both. It never takes itself seriously and this allows it to identify what abuse of power really looks like and how complicated it can be.
